Get Ready for Winter!

Every winter, homes are damaged by windstorms, heavy rain and freezing temperatures. By taking a few simple precautions, you can save time, money and stress as winter storms hit.
Before the cold hits:
- Insulate pipes in your home’s crawl spaces, basement, attic and garage. Exposed water pipes in these unheated areas are more susceptible to freezing and potential bursting.
- Drain and disconnect garden hoses and sprinkler systems and place insulated caps over hose bibs.
- Know where your water shut-off valve is located.
- Clean gutters, make sure they are properly aligned, securely attached to home and that downspouts direct water away from your home’s foundation.
- Make sure storm drains near your home are clear of debris to avoid flooding.
- Replace weather stripping around doors and caulk around windows. Seal leaks and close foundation vents to miminize cold air entering your home. Open the vents again in spring to prevent dry rot.
- Check your roof for loose or damaged shingles.
- Make sure flashing is secure around vents and chimneys.
- Make sure your fireplace flue is clear and the damper opens and closes properly.
- Have your furnace serviced and a clean air filter installed.

2nd Half Property Taxes Due Oct. 31st

King County residents who pay their property taxes themselves, rather than through their mortgage lender, should circle Halloween (Friday, October 31) on their calendar. The second half of 2014 property taxes are due on that date.
After October 31, interest charges and penalties will be added to the tax bill. To make the process easier, King County provides several ways for property owners to pay their taxes quickly and conveniently.
Tax payments can be made:
- By mail if postmarked no later than Oct. 31, 2014. Taxpayers should include their tax statement and write the property tax account number on their check or money order. Cash should not be sent through the mail.
- Online using King County’s convenient, secure online eTax application. Taxpayers may pay accounts with a credit card or an electronic debit from a checking account called an “eCheck.”
- In person at the King County Administration Building, Suite 600 – Treasury Operations, located at 500 Fourth Ave. in Seattle. Treasury Operations is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Oct. 31, Treasury Operations will be open until 5 p.m.
- At King County Community Service Centers if paid by check for the exact amount due. Taxpayers can find the address, phone number, and operating hours of the center in their area by visiting www.kingcounty.gov/CSC.
The online option provides immediate payment confirmation for current year or delinquent year(s) property tax bills. To pay online or view property tax information, taxpayers can visit www.kingcounty.gov/propertytax.
For questions about missing tax statements or other tax payment information, contact King County Treasury Operations online or by calling (206) 296-0923.
Information on senior citizen exemption and deferral programs can be obtained from the King County Assessor’s Office by calling (206) 296-3920.

COMMISSION-SPONSORED SEMINARS
Through local partnerships, the Commission helps homebuyers learn how to purchase and maintain a home. Commission-sponsored homebuyer education seminars are the first step in purchasing a home. They are free and open to the public, include information about the Commission’s first mortgage programs, down payment assistance, and other loan programs; and are accepted by all affordable housing loan programs as meeting or exceeding educational requirements.
INSTRUCTORS HAVE ATTENDED TRAINING AND AGREED TO STANDARDS WHICH ASSURE THAT:
- Seminars are at least five hours in length, covering all major aspects of the home buying process
- Seminars are presented in an open, unbiased format
- Seminars use approved training materials and handouts
- Seminars are offered by professionals who have attended the Commission’s instructor training
- No direct marketing or sales presentations may be given either by the instructor or any guest speakers
SEMINAR WORKBOOK
- Guide To Home Loans workbook is provided by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions.
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL SEMINARS
If you will be using any of the Commission’s programs to purchase your home, you must complete the seminar before your loan officer can lock in your interest rate. Many people find they gain enough information at the seminar to successfully locate and finance a home of their own. Others may find they need additional assistance. Kicks for Kids Collects 1,600 Pairs of Sneakers!

Every child deserves to start the year out on the right foot, so we recently hosted the Windermere Kicks for Kids sneaker drive for low-income youth. On August 29, more than 1,600 pairs of shoes were handed out to kids at Boys and Girls Club of King County and Mary’s Place—just in time for the first day of school.
Giving back to the community is at the core of everything Windermere does. Since 1989, we’ve donated more than $26 million to the Windermere Foundation, which funds services for low-income and homeless families. It’s all a part of our belief that service to others is not something you do, it is who you are.
